SA union challenges Sibanye-Stillwater retrenchment decision

Date: Apr 12, 2024

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUM) has expressed its dismay at the recent retrenchment announcement by Sibanye-Stillwater, despite a buoyant international gold market.

The union is gearing up to challenge the company's decision through the Commission of Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), aiming to reduce the potential impact on its members' employment.

The NUM has also issued a call for the resignation of Sibanye-Stillwater's senior management, including Chief Executive Officer Neal Froneman, citing a failure to effectively steer the company in a manner that safeguards workers' livelihoods.

"The decision by Sibanye is set to thrust numerous mine workers into severe poverty. The inability of the current leadership to manage the company is leading to significant instability in the gold sector, which is utterly unacceptable and represents a form of capitalist barbarism," stated Livhuwani Mammburu, NUM's National Spokesperson, in a recent statement.
